The Inspired Eye 3, by David duChemin, is the latest release at Craft & Vision. Like the previous two ebooks in the Inspired Eye series, it explores the topic of creativity for photographers.

Cameras are gadgets and sometimes it’s easy to get lost in technical discussions about camera models, lenses, aperture settings, custom functions and so on. But photography is also a visual art and the artistic side of the photographer needs nurturing as much, if not more, than the technical side.

Craft is important, but vision is where the magic happens. Vision is what elevates the photographers we call masters or artists above the technicians. Vision starts with imagination and creativity, and The Inspired Eye 3 helps you get a handle on that.

One of the concepts I found interesting is David’s discussion of what he calls ‘sketch photographs’. Like a writer’s drafts, these are the photos he takes before he arrives at his best image.

I find myself doing the same thing, except that I think of it as a process of ‘warming-up’. The same way a sprinter needs to warm up before running a hundred metre dash, I need to warm up my ‘creative muscles’. It’s rare that I can just ‘see’ a good image without going through this process and getting in the flow.

I’ve always liked reading about the creative process – the concept about ‘sketches’ is just one example. The more I read about the creative process, the more I understand that creativity doesn’t just happen – it requires the right conditions and inputs.

Understanding the creative process helps me be more creative. The Inspired Eye 3 has given me plenty to think about and I will be returning to this ebook (and the others in the series) and putting some of these ideas into action in the coming weeks.
