Using Bulb for Long Exposure Photography

Rangitoto Island, New Zealand

The longest shutter speed available on an EOS camera is 30 seconds. But sometimes that’s not enough – there are times when you need a longer shutter speed. That’s where the Bulb setting comes in.

2011 Top Ten

Hong Kong at night

2011 was an eventful year for me – it started off in New Zealand and finished in China. It was also my first full year working as a freelance writer. January is a natural time to reflect on the achievements and disappointments of the previous 12 months; to celebrate successes, learn from mistakes and make plans for the year to come. Part of that process is evaluating how I’ve developed as a writer and photographer. At the end of last year I chose my ten favourite photos. This year I’ve done it again. Comparing the two sets of images shows how my focus has changed; and hints at future projects and images to come.

2010 Top Ten Photos

Andrew S Gibson top ten photos of 2010

Inspired by Michael Frye’s post (and Jim Goldstein’s blog project), I’ve put together my ten favourite photos from 2010. A couple of themes have emerged, one that I didn’t take as many photos as I normally do during a year, and the other is that I’ve started taking a lot more landscape photos (mainly seascapes).

Behind the Photo: Telephoto Sunset

Bethells Beach Sunset: Canon EOS 40D with Sigma 50-150 f2.8 EX lens, 1/350 second at f2.8, ISO 100

Painting with Light: How to Add Interest to Landscapes

Bethell's Beach, New Zealand: Canon 5D Mark II with Canon EF 85mm f1.8 lens. 30 seconds, f8, ISO 200.

I took this photo at Bethell’s Beach on the west coast of New Zealand near Auckland. After you leave the city the road winds up through the rainforest of the Waitakere Ranges and down to the wild beaches on the other side. The wind blows in off the Tasman Sea and huge waves pound against cliffs and rocks.

Bethell’s Beach is on the west coast so it’s ideally placed for sunset photos. There’s also a hut for lifeguards. I haven’t seen any lifeguards yet (maybe they are just there for the summer season?) but the ramshackle wooden building has pictorial potential.
