An Interview with Photographer Nina Marie

Nude by Nina Marie

While I’ve never watched The Wire I’ve been interested in the city of Baltimore since I visited a friend there back in 2001. What I never realised from my brief visit is that the city really does seem to have a dark side. Nina Marie is from Maryland and her photos caught my eye because of her photos taken in some of the poorer parts of Baltimore. I’m not a photojournalist – and I admire photographers that risk their personal safety in the pursuit of photographing something interesting.

Beautiful China: The Photography of Ling Li

Beautiful China: The Photography of Ling Li

China is fascinating and beautiful. It’s also photogenic. I like photos of the little details that say so much: cups, food, lanterns and so on. Recently I’ve been looking at the work of several Chinese photographers that are really good at taking these sorts of images. Ling Li is one of them – her photos are full of energy and life. Take some time to look at her Flickrstream and photoblog, and enjoy the interview.

The Surreal Black and White Photography of Michael Ticcino

Anthony Loved to Fish

Anthony Loved to Fish

There’s a genre of photography that has always appealed to me and that I dabbled with a little when I first started using Photoshop, but have never pursued. I think of it as ‘surreal photography’ and like to see it when it is done well, especially in black and white. Which is exactly why I like the work of Michael Ticcino so much. His imaginative photos show how it is possible to use Photoshop to create imagery that exists only in the imagination.

An Interview with Black & White Photographer Marius Rustad

Close to Home – Eight Birds

It’s a common frustration - even a complaint – from photographers that the place they live in is not visually interesting, at least not interesting enough to build up a comprehensive body of  work. It’s a frustration I share myself, and for me the solution has always been to travel to more interesting and photogenic places.

Some photographers though are lucky enough to live somewhere with a wealth of potential subject matter close by. Marius Rustad is one of them. He lives in Norway, and his project Close to Home resulted in a series of beautiful black and white prints taken close to where he lives.
